Racing is Making a Difference

GEGE

So you ask, “How can racing make a difference?” Well, I would tell you to ask young Drake, that is pictured above but he can’t hear you. Drake is deaf and was at his last visit to the Shriners before going to St. Augustine School for the Deaf & Blind. Drake had no idea who or what Dylan was doing there. But the flashy firesuit, slick helmet and picture of his race truck was enough for Drake. It was a breath taking event to watch unravel. For about 5 minutes, there were no words exchanged. Dylan and Drake immediately connected. This young boy didn’t need to hear Dylan, he felt his excitement and caring heart. The two boys smiled, laughed and poised for a picture. As Drake went to walk back into his examining room, he looked back over his shoulder and gave Dylan a smile. It was a picture worth a thousand words.

Dylan then made his rounds throughout the rest of the hospital. It is a wonderful sight to watch Dylan walk through the halls and have doctors and nurses say hello to him by name. He has become a regular sight there. Next to visit was DJ. He was shy at first but after Dylan spent some time talking to him, he was a race fan! Then there was Joseph, who heard Dylan visiting with another child and came out of his room to meet Dylan. Tiffany, a sweetheart, well she was eager to try Dylan’s helmet on. She will definitely be racing something in her life soon. It was a day of smiles! www.Shrinershq.org (Photo/Press Release Credit – Kim Scheffler)
