Flat Tire Doesn’t Stop Dylan, Finishes 5th

Race #4 of the Joey Coulter’s-Fellows Truck Brokers Florida Pro Truck Series

With the sun blazing, humidity high and intense adrenaline running through the pits at Desoto Speedway, there was no doubt it was going to be an action packed race. The Pro Trucks had showed up in full force. A field of 24 trucks from all over Florida were there to tackle the fastest 3/8 mile high banked track. Dylan was excited to be back racing at Desoto.

The afternoon practices were challenging. Chad Pierce, the crew chief continued to make changes to the #7 Fellows Trucking Group Curing Cancer Charity Challenge Pro Truck. Every time the truck went out, it got a little faster. Dylan’s feedback every session helped Chad to get it dialed in for qualifying. Dylan would be going out 18th to qualify. After all 24 trucks had qualified, Dylan found himself mid pack. He qualified 11th with a 16.541 second lap. Pole was set with a 16.394. So as you can see, only .15 seconds between the fastest truck on the track and Dylan. Almost all the trucks were within a half a second of each other. What does this mean in a 50 lap race? It means it was going to be a side by side tight and very competitive field.

At 8:45pm, 24 Pro Trucks lined up to take the green flag. After a couple laps of warming up the tires, a lap around to wave at the crowd, it was time to race. As the fans and families of racing watched the yellow light on the pace truck go off, Dylan reached down one last time to tighten his belts. He was starting 11th, 6th row inside. As he gripped the wheel a little bit tighter, all he heard was “green green green”. Unfortunately, it wasn’t even 2 laps before the first caution flag was dropped. Dylan was able to take one spot before the yellow.

Dylan restarted in 10th. He was on top of the wheel as he was able to go low and gain a spot from the #78 truck. The next lap he took the #2x and #09 to put himself in 7th place. The next lap, lap 4 another caution flies. #42 and #51 spin coming out of turn 2. Dylan in his #7 Curing Cancer Charity Challenge Pro Truck restarted 7th. His truck was strong as he ran side by side with the #59 truck for a couple laps. He was trying to get to the inside of the #59 when the next caution flag came out.

Lap 6, Dylan was 7th. Dylan and the #2x ran side by side for two laps. The #2x was finally able to advance on the outside. Now Dylan is running 8th out of 24 trucks. Lap 11, shows another caution. Dylan gets a great restart this time. He gets to the inside on the #2x, keeps the pressure on him for a couple laps. The #2x breaks under the pressure and drives in way to hard. His truck pushes up the track and Dylan cruises by him to take 6th place. The field runs in this order for a couple laps. #36 truck who was running in 2nd place drops to the infield to put Dylan in 5th.

Caution flag on lap 21, with Dylan running in 5th. Once again, with Dylan being up on the wheel and paying close attention to the lead trucks, he gets another great restart. He is running side by side with the #2x again. This time Dylan is able to get by the #2x on the inside going through turn 1 and 2. The #2x is all over Dylan’s rear bumper. He actually hits Dylan a couple times but Dylan keeps his concentration on the race and is able to stay in front of him. Lap 24, the #2x gets to the inside of Dylan and is able to take the position after running a lap side by side, door to door racing. This puts Dylan back in 6th. Dylan is fighting a crazy loose truck. He finds himself taken on the inside a couple laps later by the #78 truck. Good thing the caution came out and Dylan would restart in 6th.

The field doesn’t even get a lap in before the next caution flag. #64 and #2x spin in turn 4. During this caution the back gate official stops Dylan on the back stretch to look at his left rear tire. Yes, it is flat. So as the crew runs to meet Dylan in the pits, the trucks gets lined back up to take the restart. It only takes Dylan’s guys a few seconds to change his left rear tire and he is back on the track for the green flag. The crowd cheers as Dylan’s truck reenters the track. He is 12th but not for long. Within the first green lap, Dylan shows he is on a mission to get back to the front as he passes the #7x truck on the inside and takes a spot from #75.

The #74 truck drives his truck to the infield which put Dylan in 9th. Lap 29, he gets a great run on the #28 to pass him on the inside. He is in 8th now. Caution flag on lap 32, the #2x truck spins the #09 truck out going into turn 3 right in front of Dylan. He quickly goes high to avoid the wrecked truck. When the field goes back green, Dylan is able to get by the #09 on the backstretch. Caution again for the #8 truck on lap 32.

Dylan restarts 7th, but after a quick restart he takes 6th place from the #09 truck. Lap 33, Dylan in his #7 Curing Cancer Charity Challenge Pro Truck is running in 5th. The first 5 trucks get a bit strung out. Within a couple laps though, the #2x is back on the rear bumper of Dylan. The 2x gets to the inside of Dylan but he can’t get it to stick, so Dylan drives away from him again. A couple laps later, the #2x drives his truck in way over his head and hits Dylan going into turn 3, but Dylan keeping incredible focus on the race is able to get his truck back under control and drive off. Lap 44, Chad commends Dylan for running a perfect line.

The next couple laps, Dylan fights off an over aggressive #2x truck. The two trucks are battling for position. While this is happening, the #64 truck pulls to the infield putting Dylan now in 4th place. With the white flag flying, the #2x truck makes one more attempt to move Dylan. As Dylan goes into turn 3, the #2x drives in once again over his head and door slams Dylan. Knocking Dylan’s truck sideways, #2x takes 4th at the checker flag. As the top trucks pull to the front stretch, Dylan very calmly pulls his truck up along side the #2x truck to show him his disappointment in the driving technique he had displayed.

Pulling a 5th place finish after having a flat tire, was a great accomplishment for Dylan and his team. They had worked hard all day and did a great job getting that flat changed quickly. Now all of you know by now that this is not the end of race day for Dylan. Even if the series doesn’t have an autograph session, Dylan does. He then went over to the grandstands and walked around. He handed out coloring sheets, hero cards and bracelets. The announcer, Rick Agnes was very receptive to Dylan taking the time to come over and meet the fans. Dylan is always going to thank the fans for coming out to watch the race, win or lose.

Special thanks to SpeedRacer Photos for their incredible action shots of Dylan.

Rain Wins - Dylan Finishes Fourth

Race #3 of the Joey Coulter’s-Fellows Truck Brokers Florida Pro Truck Series As Dylan pulled into the pits at Auburndale Speedway before noon, he knew the track was going to be a hand full with the temperature almost reaching 100 degrees. The weather was smoldering but it wasn’t nearly as hot as that #7 Curing Cancer Charity Challenge Pro Truck looked. Dylan was excited about his first race in this series but more importantly what he was sporting on the hood of his truck. Fellow Trucking Group has teamed up with Dylan for the rest of the season. Together they will be raising awareness and money for curing cancer. At 6pm the Pro Trucks lined up to qualify. Dylan would be 6th to take to the track. The way the timing is done at Auburndale Speedway is, you actually take 3 laps. The first and third are timed. Dylan took out of the infield with a mission. He was up on that wheel as he came out of turn 4. His first lap was quick, but we could see that the clock wasn’t timing him. In fact, it clocked his second lap and that was it. So all that was showing for him was one lap at 14.86. A few more trucks went out to qualify before they realized that Dylan did not get a chance to have a second lap timed. The track officials sent him out again to make one more timed lap. Let’s just say it wasn’t good, the tires had grown and it did not handle well through the corners. Dylan stuck with his one earlier lap, which put him 3rd fastest for the day. The pole sitter (14.79) pulled the pill for the inversion, and low and behold a 3 was pulled. That put Dylan in his #7 Curing Cancer Charity Challenge Pro Truck right on the pole. The autograph session was held on the front stretch during intermission. Dylan was lined up first and immediately had a line of kids and adults waiting for an autograph. This is the time during race day you will always see Dylan smiling. He radiates with so much excitement to get the chance to meet the fans and thank them for coming out to the race. Oh and he doesn’t sign just hero cards, he can even sign your arm, if asked. The crew had worked hard all day to get Dylan’s truck ready. As Michael, Dylan’s father and Joey Ragusa, the crew chief got Dylan strapped into his truck, it was time to race. Dylan feels right at home in his Pro Truck but this night was a little different. He was racing for a cure for cancer. As he made his warm up laps, his smile grew. He was ready to put the #7 Curing Cancer Charity Challenge Pro Truck in victory circle. As he drove down the back stretch and saw the back flagman pointing to the flagman, they would be going green coming out of turn 4. Dylan took one last deep breath and laid his throttle pedal to the floor. Going into turn 1, he was side by side with #09, but Dylan hooked up coming out of turn 2 to get the jump on the field. On the back stretch, the #7 Pro Truck took a strong lead. Lap 3, the #59x was on Dylan’s bumper. They tried passing him in turn 4 but Dylan wouldn’t have it. By lap 6 though, the #59x was able to get up under Dylan coming out of turn 2 and made the pass going into turn 3. Dylan ran continuous hard laps to remain in second place. The caution flag flew on lap 22 for the first time of the night. Dylan lined up outside pole for the restart. Unfortunately there was some confusion with what the flagman was doing and Dylan missed the restart. He dropped back into the field. The next lap, #36 got sideways and Dylan was able to get his #7 Curing Cancer Charity Challenge Pro Truck by him. Dylan was running a strong third place now. The top trucks are running hard. Dylan gets a little loose coming out of turn 2 and quickly the #64 truck is there to make his move. As the #64 passed Dylan going into turn 3 the #25 truck followed suit. Then immediately the caution flew for the leader who spun all by themselves in turn 3 and 4. The officials checked the track and found fluid on it. It took some time to clean the surface of the track and before the field could go green again, liquid sunshine started to fall. Not a good mixture at the track at all. The trucks drove around some laps trying to keep the heat built up in the track. They attempted to go green and half the field spun out. Then within seconds, the bottom fell out of the sky and it poured. As the rain continued to fall the officials made the decision to call the race at 31 laps. This left Dylan with a 4th place finish. “It was awesome to see Dylan on the pole, leading the pack around the track, with our charity logo on the hood,” said Fellows Trucking Group CFO Donna Fellows. “We couldn’t have been happier with the way he made his debut back into the truck series. It was unfortunate that the rains came and shortened the race, as I believe he still had some fight in the truck and could have notched a couple of spots back up, but a fourth-place finish in his first race back, and one of only two racers to lead a lap Saturday, isn’t a bad place to start.” “It was great to walk in to the pits on Saturday and watch the team making last minute adjustments to the car,” Fellows said. “There was a buzz of excitement and anticipation in the air. It solidified that our decision to partner with DMR was the right one. Everyone at DMR is such a class act. And Dylan is never too busy to give a smile and a high five to the young race fans. It’s great. We’re excited to be on board this season and looking forward to what the rest of the season holds. “ You can see Dylan race his #7 Curing Cancer Charity Challenge Pro Truck again on June 7th at Desoto Speedway. Make sure to come out and support Dylan. Special thanks to all the guys that came out to help and to all the fans that weathered the heat and rain. (Photos-Ciara Martin /Press Release Credit – Kim Scheffler) Thanks to all those that believe in Dylan and all he does on and off the track, THANKS!

Fellows Trucking Group Teams up with DMR

“We are very excited to join the team at Dylan Martin Racing,” said Fellows Trucking Group CFO Donna Fellows. “Dylan is such a talented young racer with so much potential. We’re anxious to see what he’s going to do this season and happy to be able to support him in his efforts. More important for us, however, is Dylan’s commitment to his community and to charitable efforts. That willingness to give back is a value that we place great importance on, and is one that Dylan and his team have always exhibited. It’s one that we try to exhibit as well, which is why we believe that this partnership between Fellows Trucking Group and Dylan Martin Racing is such a great fit.” Dylan is looking forward to getting back behind the wheel of his Pro Truck. He will be qualifying at Auburndale Speedway tomorrow night at 6:00pm in the #7 Fellows Trucking Group Ford Pro Truck. “I’m excited to be involved with people that believe in giving back. We are going to be able to help a lot of people and especially kids this season”, smiled Dylan Martin. Read more

Love Comes in all Shapes and Sizes

It is amazing the way you can show kids you care. A simple Soda tab can bring smiles to the children at the Shriner Hospital. Dylan held a contest the past couple months for his friends and family to collect soda tabs. Ed Long brought in the most to win himself an autographed picture of Dylan and the Late Model. There was over 13 lbs. turned in. I know you are thinking, how can something so small make a difference. Well, the Shriners had over 120,000 pounds of tabs collected last year which in turn was over $106,550. This money goes to purchase items for the kids such as arts & crafts materials or patient supplies. Something so simple makes such as impact.

Jamie Santillo, Public Relations Specialist for the Shriners was all smiles when Dylan walked in with his arms filled with tabs, “We are so thankful that Dylan has connected to the mission and vision of Shriners Hospitals for Children® - Tampa. Not only does he make it a point to visit our hospital often, he also collects soda can tabs in the community to raise money for our mission. Our patients’ faces just light up when they see him. Many of our patients have formed quite a bond with Dylan and get so excited when they hear about his latest race.” Zene, a 12 year old volunteered to take a photo with Dylan and all the soda tabs. It didn’t take long before Sheryl, an RN there and the receptionist, Michael snagged Dylan for a quick photo. Everyone that works and volunteers at the Shriners are the most energetic and caring people you could meet.

Dylan was in an examining room talking to one child as he heard, “Is that Dylan, is that Dylan Martin next door?” As Dylan walked into the room where the cute little voice had come from, there she was, Miss Jessica with the biggest smile on her face. She quickly reminded Dylan that she had met him at the East West Shrine Game at Tropicana Field. Jessica was so thrilled she got to see her favorite racecar driver again.

Dylan was also recognized by another young girl that had watched him race at Citrus County Speedway. It is amazing the children that he gets to meet when he visits the hospital. These children come from all over.

Dylan then made his way through the Rehab area and the lobby. He went downstairs to where the inpatient are but they were all in surgery or sleeping. So Dylan left all of them coloring books and hero cards to enjoy. It was another day of pure delight and gratification. Sometimes I wonder who smiles more… the kids or Dylan. He truly appreciates this opportunity he is blessed with. Dylan is holding another Soda Tab contest. It is starting today and will end on June 30th. The person that turns in the most tabs will win a 2014 Dylan Martin Racing t-shirt. So start collecting NOW!

Dylan takes some time to visit with the kids

You forget quickly that you are in a Children’s Hospital. The kids are always smiling and the nurses are full of cheer. It is such an incredible site to watch Dylan sit right down and start entertaining the kids. They too quickly forget their surroundings and just have fun. The kids had a cool craft to put together. It was a racecar with the number 7 on it, how appropriate. Then after that they all colored some of Dylan’s Coloring sheets. James colored in his racecar with green, being it is his favorite color. Madix thought it was really neat that he is 10 years old and that was the age that Dylan started racing Quarter Midgets.

“It’s always great to have Dylan visit with us at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. Whether it’s participating in arts and crafts or just talking with patients and their families, Dylan brings smiles and encouragement to those he visits with. Thank you for your visit on Monday. I know the patients that we’re able to come down had a lot of fun visiting with Dylan,” Kendal (Certified Child Life Specialist)

Dylan Awarded “Outstanding Youth of the Community”

The Raiders took the field strong this past Saturday night coming off their first loss the weekend before. The scoreboard kept showing the home team scoring more and more. But the 3rd quarter changed the ball game when the Attack took the lead. Coach Mink was able to get his boys to score on the final drive to take the lead back late in the 4th quarter. The visiting team was not giving up though as they were able to score.

Head Coach Michael Mink had this to say, “Saturday night was another intense home game that still has me in a daze. The important thing was having all the young people there cheering us on and believing in Marine Raiders Football. It was such an honor to award Dylan Martin at half time as it has been such a pleasure to continue to see this young man grow into such a fine person that it continues to motivate me to work even harder to impact our community.” Dylan was awarded a certificate by Coach Mink during the half time show, for “Outstanding Youth in the Community”. Dylan is a champion on the race track but he continues to prove that he is a strong positive force in this community too. The Marine Raiders are on the road this weekend. They take on the Savannah Steam on May 3rd. Everyone here at DMR wish them luck. Go Raiders!

Florida Marine Raiders vs. Alabama Outlawz

The Bone Yard welcomed the Outlawz from Alabama this past Saturday night. The guest of honor during the halftime show was non-other than your very own Lakeland racecar driver, Dylan Martin. The Lakeland Civic Center roared with excitement and wonder as the black #7 drove onto the artificial turf. Dylan and his Pro Truck took a lap around the infield as some of his crew members tossed out t-shirts, bracelets and hero cards to the cheering fans.

The game started out going in the right direction. But once the Outlawz took the lead from the hometown team, the Raiders couldn’t get it back until late in the 4th quarter. They had an opportunity right at the end to clinch the win but just couldn’t get it done. A touchdown on a kick return set the fate for the Raiders. They lost 38-44.

Head Coach Michael Mink wasn’t pleased with the outcome of the game but he had this to say, “It is always a pleasure to be around Dylan as he is a hometown hero. The Florida Marine Raiders are always proud to have him as a guest. Win or lose on the field or race track teaming with Dylan Martin Racing and their community efforts we are all winners.” The Marine Raiders are at home again this weekend against the St. Louis Attack at 7 pm.
