Racing is Making a Difference

GEGE

So you ask, “How can racing make a difference?” Well, I would tell you to ask young Drake, that is pictured above but he can’t hear you. Drake is deaf and was at his last visit to the Shriners before going to St. Augustine School for the Deaf & Blind. Drake had no idea who or what Dylan was doing there. But the flashy firesuit, slick helmet and picture of his race truck was enough for Drake. It was a breath taking event to watch unravel. For about 5 minutes, there were no words exchanged. Dylan and Drake immediately connected. This young boy didn’t need to hear Dylan, he felt his excitement and caring heart. The two boys smiled, laughed and poised for a picture. As Drake went to walk back into his examining room, he looked back over his shoulder and gave Dylan a smile. It was a picture worth a thousand words.

Dylan then made his rounds throughout the rest of the hospital. It is a wonderful sight to watch Dylan walk through the halls and have doctors and nurses say hello to him by name. He has become a regular sight there. Next to visit was DJ. He was shy at first but after Dylan spent some time talking to him, he was a race fan! Then there was Joseph, who heard Dylan visiting with another child and came out of his room to meet Dylan. Tiffany, a sweetheart, well she was eager to try Dylan’s helmet on. She will definitely be racing something in her life soon. It was a day of smiles! www.Shrinershq.org (Photo/Press Release Credit – Kim Scheffler)

Priceless

GE

Nose, fenders and front bumpers = $710, lower radiator hose and air box = $215, new fuel cell = $265 …making little 4 yr old Madison, who is battling leukemia smile…PRICELESS!!!!

Madison Stewart was there with her family to unveil the new hood on Dylan Martin’s Pro Truck. Even though the team could use the financial support of a hood sponsor, it was more important to Dylan to showcase the three children that will be honored at The Joey Coulter Charity 200 Race Weekend Fundraiser in December. For more information on that race weekend or to give to the cause, go to www.carsevents.com

Dylan and his Blackwater Ford Raptor looked good in qualifying. He qualified 4th with a 14.957 second lap, pole was a 14.84. Only 1 tenth of a second between pole and 5th starting position, it was going to be a tight race. After 5 straight rain outs, the frustration, eagerness and anxiousness of the drivers was obvious in the 7 cautions that the 50 lap race had. The #7 Pro Truck started second row outside. He fell back to 6th in the first couple laps waiting for the tires to warm up. Battling for 5th place, the #26 truck and Dylan ended up spinning out in the middle of turn 1 & 2. Both of them sustained damage and headed to the pits. The crew got him back on the track before the green flag dropped. Dylan restarted at the tail of the field with no nose and front fenders on the truck. Within in 2 laps, he had moved up 2 positions. Two laps later he passed the #09 truck on the outside for 9th. Dylan was determined to get back to the front. He continued to drive his truck hard passing the #59x on the inside to take 8th.

Lap 21, a caution flies. Crew chief, Chad Pierce makes the call to bring Dylan back into the pits for an air pressure adjustment. When the race goes back green, within the first lap, Dylan has moved up two spots. Another caution comes out, Dylan is starting 8th. Unfortunately 2 laps later, another caution for a wreck in turn 1, that Dylan catches the tail end of. With no protection on his front end, it cuts the lower radiator hose. Dylan heads to the pits again. The crew thrashes to get him back in the race. Dylan then sits at the back gate waiting for a caution that never happens. The only way you can reenter a race is under caution.

Dylan drives his wounded Pro Truck back to the trailer. Crew chief, Chad states, “It was a rough night for the point leaders. Steve #41 lost a radiator and we lost a radiator hose”. It was a frustrating night for the #7 team but that doesn’t stop Dylan from going to the grandstands. He displayed great character by taking the time to go and thank his fans for coming out. Even at 15 years old, he realizes that it isn’t always about winning it is about doing your best and being thankful for the opportunity to race.

As he loads up his wrecked truck, he is still all smiles. Why…because a little 4 year old girl gave him a high 5 and smiled!!

5th rain out in the Florida United Promoters Series

GE

“It’s raining, it’s pouring but the truck racers are not snoring…they are agitated, anxious and eager.” Saturday night rain out makes for the 5th straight rain out in the FUPS Truck series, Dylan was there to go for his second straight win. He was also going to be driving Preston Iron’s V8 Bomber in a 50 lap race.

GE

Dylan and his Blackwater Ford Raptor looked good all afternoon. He took to the infield twice to try to qualify. But both times it started sprinkling hard enough they had to pull in. The race was called around 8pm due to the weather. It was a very discouraging night for racing but on the flip side, Dylan was interviewed by PGTV for a segment about school students that are athletes. Mark Kuty and Bryan Lacey (Television Producers) came out in the afternoon to meet with Dylan. Dodging the rain drops and a random race car going by, it made for an interesting interview to say the least.

St. Joseph’s Children Hospital Tampa, FL Visit with the kids

6.15.13 NSS Truck 1So how does racing help kids…just ask Sophia, Andrew, Hunter and Rylee and they will tell you how. How sitting at a table drawing race cars and coloring in race trucks with a real live race car driver helped them forget about being in a hospital. If only for an hour, they were just kids, no IV’s, no doctors, just smiles, fun and laughter.

Dylan was happy to hear that others in the community had come to visit the kids. Hockey and football players had stopped by but one parent made a point to let Dylan know that it was extra special to have a 15 year old come by and hang out with them. To sit and draw and even play Mr. Potato head. The kids gravitate to his caring young spirit.

6.15.13 NSS Truck 1 When leaving, Leah Class (Child Life Representative) apologized for only having a few children capable of coming down to visit with him and then asked Dylan if he would come back in October. He smiled and answered, “Whether it is for 1 kid or 100 kids, I will be here. I just made 4 new friends.”

4th Rain Out in the FUPS Pro Truck series

6.15.13 NSS Truck 1

The Blackwater Ford Raptor laid down the fastest lap in practice but it never got the chance to race. The track was extremely hot and slick but Chad Pierce was able to dial the truck in just right for Dylan. When you put knowledge and talent together you get one heck of a fast truck. And that it was! Unfortunately right before qualifying the skies opened up and spoiled Dylan’s opportunity to make it a back to back win. This makes for the 4th straight rain out in the FUPS Truck series.

This weekend he will be driving double duty at Auburndale Speedway in the FUPS Pro Truck (Saturday Aug. 24th is a make-up rain date for the June 29th rain out) and the V8 Bomber Class.

A special thanks to all our sponsors and fans that believe in our journey, thank you!

Dylan goes pure stock racing

Dylan went back to the roots of racing this past weekend and tried his hand at running a pure stock racecar. He ran a 1974 Monte Carlo in the V8 Bomber class. The car belongs to Preston Irons. He asked Dylan to come wheel it a few times. That is exactly what Dylan did this past Saturday night at his home track, Auburndale Speedway. With the weather hot and extremely humid, the track was a bit slick. Dylan pulled his pill to start in the second Heat race. He took the green starting in 4th position. After trying the outside a couple times and not quite having enough to pull it off he had to settle for finishing in 4th.

6.15.13 NSS Truck 1

The Feature put Dylan starting 9th. With 12 cars starting nose to tail, side by side they took the green. By lap 5, Dylan in his #6 Black Monte pulled to the outside of #25. A half lap later it was Dylan’s position. He then went to the outside of #57 and was working him hard. Unfortunately the caution flag dropped for a car that spun in turn 4. On the restart, Dylan was in 7th. He spent time trying different lines, entry earlier, exit later, until he found his groove. When the second caution flew for a car spinning in turn 4, Dylan with his keen eye was able to miss by going high and then low. Two laps later the checker fell with Dylan in 7th. He got out of Preston’s car and said, “Man, now that was fun”. He is looking forward to getting behind the wheel again this weekend. He will be racing this race for his sister, Ciara. She will be leaving the following day for college.

Bronson (rain out) 7/12/13

Well Mother Nature won again. Dylan and his crew showed up to conquer the fastest 1/4 mile track at Bronson Speedway once again. This FUPS race got canceled on May 11th due to rain and again ended up being called due to the liquid sunshine of Florida.

GE

Dylan was able to get in some practice on Friday night though before Mother Nature showed up. His Blackwater Ford Raptor was quick right out of the trailer. Chad has definitely got the set up for this track down. Dylan's attempt at three wins in a row will just have to wait...again. The rescheduled date has not been released yet but will most likely be in the fall.

(Bowling) C.A.R.S. Racing for a Cause 7-20-13

How do racing and bowling help Alex, who is 4 years old and battling Leukemia? Well the answer is simple for the more than 80 people who showed up to bowl this past Saturday morning. Rick Bristol’s C.A.R.S. Racing for a Cause holds this event to kick off the fundraising for three very deserving kids. The money raised by this event go towards the grand total that is given out in December to three families at the 8th Annual Joey Coulter Charity 200 Race Weekend. Dylan Martin bowled with his team to help support this cause. His team didn’t get any awards for being the best bowlers there but more important to Dylan was making a difference. And this he did folks, not by bowling a ‘Turkey’ but by bringing in the most money. Dylan and his team raised $1500. Did you hear me, I said $1500, isn’t that just awesome.

So there were a few strikes, splits and even some gutter balls but in the end everyone had a great time and a lot of smiles were raised for three very special kids. " We so appreciate the support of so many great folks to come and bowl and give to help the children and families dealing with terminal illness. The Dylan Martin crew were a help in a great way as together the team combined for $1500 to help with the cause. I am blessed to have many great friends like the Martins, along with Kim Scheffler, Chad Pierce and others on the team. 83 Bowlers joined to raise funds to help these families in their fights. Thanks to all and may God Bless each of them for giving" stated organizer Rick Bristol. SPECIAL THANKS from Dylan Martin Racing to : Futurecare Learning Center in Auburndale; Garrett’s Medical Supply in Winter Haven; Clayton Homes of Lakeland; Reiter Electric in Auburndale; Ted’s Repair Service in Winter Haven; Alfred White Sr.; Warehouse Flooring; Dr. Cano; Victor Shumate; Toni Dorsey; Nancy Buchanan & Blackwater Integration.
